CV vs Resume: Which One Do Employers Really Want?

One of the most confusing questions job seekers face is whether to send a CV or a resume. In Uganda, the two terms are often used as if they mean the same thing; but there are differences, and understanding them can help you present yourself more effectively.

A CV (curriculum vitae) is usually 2–3 pages long and provides a full history of your education, work, and skills. A resume, on the other hand, is much shorter, typically one page, and focuses on highlights and achievements. Most Ugandan employers expect a CV, but international NGOs, embassies, and competitive graduate programs may specifically ask for resumes. Having both ready gives you flexibility and professionalism.
Rather than worrying about the label, focus on relevance. Keep your CV clear, concise, and updated, and prepare a tailored one-page resume for opportunities that require it. Think of the CV as your “full story” and the resume as your “elevator pitch.” However, both serve the same purpose: to show why you are the right person for the role.
